Brief History
John Wright Company (JWCO) was formed in 1989 to focus exclusively on the engineering and execution of blowout intervention engineering. At its inception the company focused specifically on relief well projects and blowout contingency planning where relief wells would be the most probable control method.
In 1990 JWCO entered into a two year contractual arrangement with Vector Magnetics, Inc., to run their operations during which time the two companies refined the techniques of directional drilling, surveying and electromagnetic ranging to define the current industry techniques for direct well intersections. During this time Rahn Pitzer (now with Vector Magnetics) and Pete Slagel joined JWCO.
In 1991 Jim Woodruff joined JWCO as a directional drilling and Intersection Specialist.
In 1992 John Wright co-founded Well Flow Dynamics AS, the first company to specialize exclusively in dynamic multiphase blowout flow and hydraulic kill analysis.
In 1993 Larry Flak and John Ely (Ely Associates, Inc.) joined JWCO as consulting specialists; two prominent individuals in blowout intervention engineering. With their expertise the company expanded to provide engineering services for all blowout intervention projects with increased emphasis on logistical coordination of both surface and sub-surface intervention projects.
In 1993 JWCO formed a contractual alliance with Boots & Coots, LP and formed Wright Boots & Coots Engineering in 1995. This alliance was created to meet the changing needs of the industry for integrated services. With the combined services of professional oilwell firefighters and snubbing specialists we offered a single source for the application and integration of blowout intervention technologies.
In August 1995, the agreement with Boots & Coots was amicably terminated by John Wright Company (Larry Flak stayed with Boots & Coots). This was executed so John Wright Company could concentrate on developing an integrated "Well Control Management System" for the oil and gas industry and not appear biased toward a single service provider for blowout control services. John Wright Company continued to perform engineering services on relief well and underground blowout operations and contingency plans.
In 1995 John Wright Company and Martek Software formed a business agreement to develop software for information management applications for well control and related training material.
In 1996 John Wright Company expanded the idea of a five part integrated "Well Control Management System" for the oil and gas industry. John Wright Company entered into a two year contract with Abel Engineering to provide additional blowout control engineering resources.
In 1997 a worldwide contract with Royal Dutch Shell was executed for the provision of implementing the "Well Control Management System" and providing blowout control engineering and response services. A similar agreement was made on a local basis for Mobil Oil Nigeria, Ashland Oil Nigeria and Sable Offshore Energy Inc.
In 1998 John Wright acquired 50% of the shares of Well Flow Dynamics AS, a critical partner in blowout control hydraulic modeling.
In 1998 John Wright and Michael Allcorn of Alert Disaster Control, Singapore, agreed to form an engineering alliance in Asia between their respective related companies.
